Wendy Swackhamer

Wendy Swackhamer has lived in Wellington County for over 30 years. She has 3 young children and owns and operates a hobby farm just outside of Hillsburgh. Wendy has been passionate about the Fire Service and serving her community for as long as she can remember. Getting involved with Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue was initially done to improve training as a first responder but it quickly grew to much more than that. Wendy is now one of fewer than 10 people in Canada to have successfully completed the level of training she has. Dr. Rebecca Gimenez of TLAER Inc. has been a personal mentor to Wendy and has become a close friend.

This experience is what prompted Wendy to look around and think about what services we have available in our area if a large animal incident were to happen. She came up with nothing, so she took a leap of faith and started a business called Wellington County Large Animal Emergency Rescue. Wendy will respond with her team to any incident involving a large animal (farm type animal) either by direct contact from the owner or through 911 and the local Fire Department. Wendy also dedicates 4 nights a month to going to Fire Halls giving them basic awareness training. Wendy is available to come to you and give the same training – “the more people trained – then better our chances are at a good outcome in every situation”. Wendy has also been trained with The Ontario Fire Marshall for Fire Prevention and Life Safety. She has also completed a Fire Department Legislation course. Wendy would be very happy to visit your Farm to help you with Barn Safety. She will set you up with an Emergency Action Plan and will give you pointers on how to make things safer for all involved.

At Can Am Wendy will cover such topics as: Introduction to Large Animal Rescue, Behaviour & Husbandry, First Aid & Field Euthanasia, Basic Technics, Barn Fires & Barn Safety. WCLAER will also be on site with Equine Guelph and Equimania, please stop in and see Wendy and the Equimania Team.
